American university Massachusets Institute Of Technology (MIT) has launched a course that can be taken online for free - and hopes it will be the first of many.
Circuits & Electronics 6.002x is intended as a first course in an electrical engineering degree, equivalent to the university's offline version of the course. While the first version relies on students' honesty to make sure that they don't cheat, it's far from an easy ride. MIT suggests that students should expect to spend 10hours a week on the course, and that it will involve a substantial amount of practical work as well as theoretical study.
While anyone can sign up for the course, which will run from March until June, the material is likely to require A-level physics and maths. Those who complete the course successfully will come away with an electronic certificate, and an understanding of the essentials of designing circuits.
