Technology can look like a man’s world, but women can be successful in tech too - and there are lots of resources to help.
The numbers may be low, but there are plenty of successful women running companies like Everyclick and Wildfire, as well as working in senior positions at places like Facebook and Google.
In fact, the first ever computer program was written by a woman - Ada Lovelace - who devised it when computers were still only a theory. Later, Grace Hopper invented some of the first programming languages, invented the word “bug” for a software error and was awarded the first Computer Science “Man” of the Year Award from the Data Processing Management Association.
Women in Technology provides lots of information to help you achieve your potential in the tech world, including:
- A recruitment service
- A job search tool
- Training events
- Interviews with women working in technology
- An email newsletter on tech news and upcoming events
The British Computer Society also runs a group for women in IT, including an events calendar and an online discussion group.
More locally, “Girl Geek” groups have sprung up across the country - and around the world - to give women working, studying or just interested in technology and science a chance to meet up and share their passion.
